  My wife and I made a quick trip to see the last of the Tundra Swans on Lake Mattamuskeet before they headed north. Hotel Engelhard is about 20 minutes away. The rooms are very comfortable and very clean. The host and hostess are very nice and welcoming. Engelhard is a working fishing/shrimp/oyster town. Take your camera. There's a Red & White grocery store across from the Hotel. We enjoy "down east" for it's big skies and friendly people and its sparseness -- think opposite of Myrtle Beach. The hotel owners couldn't have been nicer! We will stay there again.

  Stayed with my kids for an impromptu road trip.
  We could have stayed on the Outer Banks in Roanoake Island but luckily we stayed here.
  So many people review that the owners are warm and accommodating. They speak truth. We could not have better hostesses.
  The rooms themselves are spare, basic and sufficient for a peaceful night. They are on the small side but this is a blessing because it makes them easy to cool and have a good night's rest which you will be thankful for because pf the humidity and heat of the surrounding area.
  There is a canal nearby where crab and fish can be easily caught. So easily that even we did it, our first try.
  A key feature of the hotel is that locals will stop by to eat and chat. This is not to be missed. It will make you evening, especially if you are tired and just want to unwind and jaw a bit.

  Great place to stay. Owners are wonderful people, as are the locals. Taught their grandson how to tune a guitar while we were there.
